Observation Narrative
Plot location: along N side of Broad Run, 1.37 km SE of jct. Rt. 245 and US 17.
Rock Types Present: a few small metabasalt boulders (washed from adjacent slope).
This habitat is a shallow, backswamp slough in the alluvium floodplain of Broad Run. A small remnant of older floodplain forest occurs over a few acres here, having escaped clearing and/or more recent beaver depredations. The hydroperiod of this site could probably be described as shortly seasonally flooded. The slough was completely dry on the date of sampling. Invasive weeds, including Microstegium vimineum (not in plot), Alliaria petiolata, and Polygonum caespitosum var. longisetum, are major threats to this floodplain.
